  • Wah Lee sells new energy vehicle battery materials, readying sales growth

Wah Lee Industrial Corp. (3010.TT) announced April 2019 unaudited consolidated sales of NT$4,464M, a growth of 0.2% from the same period last year.  The cumulative Jan.-Apr. consolidated sales reached NT$16,530M, grew by 2.7% from the same period last year.  Focusing on areas such as semiconductor front-end manufacturing process chemicals, PCB high frequency substrates, next generation electronic products, and 5G, biomedical, Electric Vehicles, and energy storage system, Wah Lee’s sales has strong growth momentum and expects promising future growth.

Saving energy and reducing carbon emission has been the hot topic of this century.  More and more traditional car manufacturers started their R&D for EVs, and more governments set out schedules for prohibiting internal combustion cars.  Together with the subsidy policy, global EV sales have continued to grow.  According to Inside EVs, the total EV units sold around the world were 1.714 million, a 40% year on year growth.  While China remained the largest EV market, selling 1.256 million units, it posted a 61.7% growth from a year ago.  Despite China has cut down on the subsidy for EVs, the expected 2020 market share of China EVs will be 59% of the world.

The lithium batteries for EVs include anode, cathode materials, separator film, and electrolyte, featuring fast charge, high capacity and safety.  The distance to travel of the batteries is the top priority of consumers, therefore, the high capacity density Li-Ion batteries are gaining popularity in the high-end EV market.  Anode materials play key role in providing high capacity.  High capacity comes with high demand for safety, therefore, separator film and packaging materials for Lithium batteries are important.  The fast charge feature depends upon the cathode materials.  Wah Lee has devoted its work on the rechargeable battery area, especially on the materials for Li-ion batteries.  We have obtained the sales rights for anode, cathode materials, separator films, and packaging materials from Japanese and Taiwanese suppliers and have started selling into top 10 battery makers in mainland China.

EV sales have depended on the government subsidy policies in the past.  During the process of trimming the subsidy policy, there will be some turbulence in the market and the supply chain.  However, the industry can take this opportunity to select the best-fit players and push forward the EV market toward a healthier condition.  The trend to march toward EV is inevitable because environmental protection is embedded in the worldwide society and the end of internal combustion cars is approaching.  EV filtration will continue to grow in the coming years.  Wah Lee will definitely play an important role in providing related materials.
